What to Wear for Autumn Family Photos in Dublin
Autumn is one of my favourite times of year for family photos in Dublin. The colours are gorgeous, the light is softer and, most importantly, the kids can run around without everyone melting in the summer heat!
One of the questions I’m asked most before a family photoshoot is:
“What should we wear?”
The good news is you don’t need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days when everyone needed to turn up in matching white shirts and jeans.
Instead, choose colours that work well together without everyone wearing exactly the same thing.
For autumn family photos, warm neutrals and earthy tones photograph beautifully — think creams, browns, rust, burgundy, mustard, olive green and denim.
You don’t need to use all of them! Pick two or three colours and build everyone’s outfits around those.
Start With One Person
If you’re struggling to coordinate everyone, start with one outfit you really like.
Usually Mam’s!
Once you’ve chosen that, it becomes much easier to pick outfits for everyone else that complement it.
And don’t worry about everyone being perfectly coordinated. We’re photographing a family, not a catalogue.
Layers Are Your Friend
Autumn weather in Dublin can be unpredictable, so layers are perfect.
Cardigans, jumpers, jackets, boots and scarves can all add texture while keeping everyone warm.
For younger kids especially, I’d always rather they were comfortable than freezing and miserable five minutes into the photoshoot.
Avoid Anything Too Distracting
I generally recommend avoiding huge logos, very bright neon colours and extremely busy patterns.
They can draw your eye straight to the clothes rather than the people in the photograph.
That doesn’t mean everyone has to wear beige! Colour is absolutely welcome — we just want the focus to stay on your family.
Most Importantly, Wear Something That Feels Like You
You should still look like yourselves.
If your child lives in dresses, let them wear a dress. If they’re happiest in jeans and boots, that’s perfect too.
And please don’t put your toddler into an outfit they’re going to spend the entire photoshoot trying to take off!
The best family photographs happen when everyone is comfortable enough to forget about what they’re wearing and just enjoy themselves.
My autumn family photoshoots in Dublin and Meath are relaxed, natural and child-led. We’ll walk, play, explore and make the most of all those gorgeous autumn colours.
So coordinate rather than match, add a few layers and don’t overthink it.
Your family is far more important than your outfits.
