What If My Child Won’t Cooperate for Family Photos?

Siblings during Dublin family photoshoot

One of the biggest worries parents have before a family photoshoot is:

“What if my child just doesn’t cooperate?”

As a family photographer in Dublin, I hear this all the time, particularly from parents of toddlers and younger children.

The good news is, I’m not expecting them to!

Your Child Doesn’t Need to Sit and Smile

My family photoshoots are very relaxed. I’m not going to spend an hour asking your child to sit still, look at the camera and smile.

We’ll walk, play, explore, have cuddles and let the kids move around.

If they want to run, we run. If they need a few minutes with Mam or Dad, that’s absolutely fine too.

The aim isn’t perfect behaviour. It’s to capture your family as you actually are.

What If They’re Shy?

Some children need a little time to warm up to a new person pointing a camera at them, completely understandable!

I don’t rush them.

We can start with everyone together, let them stay close to you and gradually give them time to get comfortable.

Usually, once they realise there’s no pressure to perform for the camera, their personality starts to come out.

And What About Toddlers?

Toddlers are going to toddler.

They might run in the opposite direction, refuse to hold someone’s hand or decide halfway through that they’ve had enough.

None of that means your photoshoot has gone wrong.

Some of my favourite family photographs come from those in-between moment, being scooped up by Dad, cuddling into Mam, chasing each other or laughing at something that had absolutely nothing to do with me.

Those are often the photographs that feel most like your family.

You Don’t Need Perfectly Behaved Kids for Beautiful Photos

If you’re putting off booking family photos because you’re worried your children won’t cooperate, please don’t.

I’ve photographed plenty of children who weren’t particularly interested in having their photograph taken!

My job isn’t to make your children perform for the camera. It’s to work around them, keep things relaxed and find those little moments as they happen.

My family photoshoots in Dublin and Meath are relaxed, natural and child-led, so there’s very little your child can do to “ruin” the session.

Come as you are.

A little bit of chaos is usually where the good stuff happens anyway.
