Four Years of Autumn Family Photos in Dublin
Every October for the past four years, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing the same family.
And I absolutely love this little tradition.
We started with a full family photoshoot, did another full session along the way and, more recently, they’ve come along to my shorter Family Pic Days.
Looking back through four Octobers of photographs is such a lovely reminder of why I think regular family photos are so worth doing.
Why Autumn Is Perfect for Family Photos
October is one of my favourite months for family photography in Dublin.
The greens are starting to turn into those gorgeous yellows, oranges and rusty autumn colours, the light can be beautiful and the kids get to wrap up and run around outdoors.
There’s also something about autumn clothes that photographs really well — cosy knits, boots, jackets and layers against all those changing colours.
And this family has definitely made the most of it!
From Full Family Photoshoots to Mini Sessions
Over the four years, we’ve done a mixture of sessions.
Their full family photoshoots gave us plenty of time to wander, let the kids play and create a really varied gallery.
Now they come back for my shorter Family Pic Days, which are perfect when you already have lots of family photographs but want to keep documenting the kids as they grow.
You don’t necessarily need a full photoshoot every single year.
Sometimes twenty relaxed minutes on an October morning is all you need to update the family photographs and capture another little stage.
Four Octobers, So Much Change
This is my favourite part.
When you see photographs from one year, the changes don’t always seem huge.
Put four Octobers side by side and it’s a completely different story.
The kids get taller. Their faces change. Their personalities come out more and more. Suddenly the little one isn’t so little anymore.
And while beautiful autumn colours make a gorgeous backdrop, years later that’s not really what matters.
It’s seeing them at that age.
An Autumn Tradition Worth Keeping
Family photographs don’t have to be something you only book when there’s a new baby or a big milestone.
I love the idea of making them part of the year.
For this family, October has become their time to do it — and four years later they’ve got this gorgeous record of their children growing up, one autumn at a time.
My autumn family photoshoots in Dublin and Meath are relaxed, natural and child-led. Some families choose a full session and others come along to one of my shorter Family Pic Days.
Whichever you choose, don’t worry about getting the perfect photograph every year.
Just keep showing up in them.
Because when you look back four autumns later, you’ll be very glad you
