The Best Locations for Communion Photos in Dublin

Family of 4 during quick and easy Communionphotoshoot

Choosing where to have Communion photographs taken can make a huge difference to how relaxed the day feels.

Some families love a few quick photographs outside the church while everyone is together. Others would rather wait until the afternoon, when the rush has settled, and meet somewhere beautiful where children can move, play and enjoy the moment.

There is no one “best” location for every family, it depends on your church, where you are celebrating and who you would like included. These are some of my favourite places for relaxed, natural First Holy Communion photos in Dublin.

Malahide Castle

Malahide Castle is one of the most popular locations for Communion photos in Dublin, particularly for families in Malahide, Swords and North Dublin.

The grounds are beautiful and spacious, with plenty of greenery and room for children to relax rather than feeling like they are standing still for a formal photo shoot. It is ideal for a mix of lovely individual portraits and natural photographs with parents, siblings and grandparents.

It works especially well for an afternoon Communion session, when you have had time to enjoy the church and take a breath before the family celebrations.

If you are looking for Communion photos at Malahide Castle, it is worth arranging your session early.

St Anne’s Park, Raheny

St Anne’s Park is a gorgeous choice for families on Dublin’s north side. It has open green space, mature trees and lots of little pockets that work beautifully for photographs.

It is a great option for siblings because there is room for them to move around and be themselves. The result feels much more relaxed than trying to keep everyone still in one spot.

For families celebrating around Raheny, Clontarf, Artane, Donaghmede or nearby, St Anne’s can be an easy and lovely choice.

Phoenix Park

Phoenix Park is ideal if you are looking for open space and a softer, more natural backdrop. It works beautifully for families who want photographs that feel less formal and more like a relaxed walk together.

There is plenty of space for grandparents, godparents and extended family, while still allowing us to take a few simple portraits of your Communion child. It is particularly lovely later in the day, when the light is softer and the day has slowed down a little.

Church grounds

For many families, the church itself is the most meaningful location.

A short session before or after the ceremony means your child is in their Communion clothes, everyone is together and the day is at its most exciting. We can keep it simple: your child on their own, parents and siblings, then any must-have photographs with grandparents or godparents.

Church grounds can be busy on Communion mornings, so I always work quickly and calmly. You get the important photographs without missing the chance for your child to celebrate with their friends.

Your home or celebration venue

Do not overlook your home or the place where you are celebrating. It may not feel like an obvious photography location, but it can be the easiest and most personal choice.

This is especially good if grandparents or extended family are coming along. There is no need to move everyone again, and your child can relax after the ceremony. A garden, a bright room, a hotel entrance or a quiet spot near the venue can be more than enough for beautiful photographs.

How do you choose the right location?

The best place is the one that makes the day feel easiest for your family.

If you have a busy church morning and a big family meal planned, an afternoon session at Malahide Castle, St Anne’s Park or Phoenix Park can give you a calmer experience. If having everyone together matters most, photographs at the church or venue may be the perfect fit.

When you enquire, tell me your church, ceremony time and celebration plans. I can help you choose a location and time that works around your day — not the other way around.
