What If My Kids Don’t Behave at a Family Photoshoot? (And Why It’s Completely Normal)
If you’ve ever thought:
“What if my kids don’t behave?”
You’re not alone.
It’s probably the number one thing parents worry about before booking a family photoshoot.
And honestly?
I expect it
As a Dublin family photographer (and a mum of three), I don’t walk into a session expecting perfect behaviour. I walk in expecting real kids.
HERE’S THE TRUTH NO ONE TELLS YOU
The best photos don’t come from perfectly behaved children.
They come from:
movement
personality
little moments in between
The laughs, the cuddles, the running, the chaos.
That’s where the magic is.
WHAT IF THEY WON’T STAND STILL?
They don’t need to.
I don’t expect children to stand still, look at the camera, and smile on command.
Instead:
👉 we move
👉 we play
👉 we keep things relaxed
That’s how you get natural photos that actually feel like your family.
WHAT IF THEY HAVE A MELTDOWN?
It happens.
Tired, hungry, overwhelmed… kids have their moments.
When it does:
we pause
we reset
we give them space
And then we gently start again.
There’s no pressure to “perform”.
WHAT I’M ACTUALLY DOING DURING YOUR SESSION
This is the part most parents don’t see.
I’m constantly:
reading your child’s mood
adjusting the pace
knowing when to step in and when to step back
So even if it feels a bit chaotic to you…
👉 I know exactly what I’m doing
SHORT SESSIONS CHANGE EVERYTHING
One of the biggest reasons kids “don’t behave” is because sessions go on too long.
That’s why I keep things:
👉 short
👉 relaxed
👉 and child-led
Before they get bored, we’re done.
WHAT PARENTS ALWAYS SAY AFTER
This is the part I love.
Parents often arrive worried and leave saying:
👉 “That was so much easier than I thought”
And then when they see their gallery:
👉 “I can’t believe you got these”
FINAL THOUGHT
Your kids don’t need to be perfect.
They just need to be themselves.
That’s where the real moments are.
And those are always the ones you’ll love most.
