Should You Cancel Your Family Photoshoot Because of the Weather?

If there is one thing we can all agree on in Ireland, it's that the weather rarely does what the forecast says it will.

This June has been a perfect example. I've lost count of the number of times I've checked the forecast only to see heavy rain predicted for days in advance, only for the day itself to turn out absolutely fine.

One of the most common questions I get from families before their session is:

"What happens if it rains?"

The short answer is that I almost never make a decision to postpone a family photoshoot until the night before or the morning of the session.

Weather Forecasts Change Constantly

A weather forecast five or six days ahead is often little more than an educated guess.

I've had sessions where rain was forecast all week, only for the skies to clear just in time for beautiful photographs. Equally, I've seen forecasts predict sunshine only for a shower to appear out of nowhere.

This is especially true in Dublin and across Ireland, where conditions can change several times in a single day.

Because of this, I always recommend holding off on worrying about the forecast until we're much closer to the session.

Cloudy Days Are Actually Perfect for Family Photos

Many people assume that bright sunshine creates the best photographs. In reality, photographers often love overcast days.

Cloud cover acts like a giant softbox in the sky, creating flattering light with no harsh shadows, no squinting, and beautiful even skin tones.

Some of my favourite family photographs have been taken on grey Irish evenings.

The focus stays exactly where it should be: on your family and the connection between you.

What If It Is Raining?

If there is genuine heavy rain forecast for the entire session, then of course we'll look at rescheduling.

The key word here is genuine.

A small shower before the session, a brief drizzle, or a forecast showing rain for part of the day doesn't automatically mean we need to cancel.

Often showers pass quickly and we can simply adjust the start time slightly or wait a few minutes for the weather to move through.

Trust the Process

After years of photographing families outdoors around Dublin, Wicklow and Meath, I've learned that patience usually pays off.

Some of my favourite sessions have started with worried messages about the forecast and ended with gorgeous skies, happy children, and beautiful family photographs.

That's why I always suggest waiting until the night before or the morning of the session before making any decisions.

More often than not, the weather surprises us.

Planning Your Family Photoshoot in Dublin

If you've booked an outdoor family photoshoot with me, try not to spend the week beforehand refreshing the weather app every hour. I'll be keeping an eye on conditions and will always contact you if I feel a reschedule is necessary.

Until then, focus on getting excited about spending time together as a family.

The Irish weather might be unpredictable, but beautiful family memories are always worth the wait.
