How to Choose the Perfect Location for Your Family Photos in Dublin
One of the first questions families ask when booking a session is:
"Where should we have our photos taken?"
The good news is that there isn't one perfect location. The best place is one that suits your family, your children's personalities and the type of photographs you want to look back on for years to come.
As a family photographer in Dublin, I've photographed families in parks, forests, beaches, gardens and even in their own homes. Every location creates a different feel, and choosing the right one makes a huge difference.
Choose Somewhere That Means Something to Your Family
The most meaningful family photographs are often taken somewhere you already love.
Maybe it's the beach where you spend sunny evenings, the park your children visit every weekend, or a favourite woodland where they love to explore.
Choosing a location with happy memories instantly makes your photographs feel more personal and helps everyone relax.
Think About Your Children's Ages
Different locations work better for different ages.
Toddlers often enjoy wide open spaces where they can safely run, climb and explore.
Older children might enjoy woodland walks, beaches or somewhere they can kick a football, collect leaves or play games during the session.
The less they feel like they're having their photo taken, the more natural the images become.
Consider the Time of Day
Light is one of the biggest factors in creating beautiful photographs.
Early morning and evening usually provide the softest, most flattering light. These times are also often quieter, making it easier for children to relax without lots of people around.
If your little ones have naps or early bedtimes, we'll always choose a time that works for your family first.
Don't Worry About the Weather
One question I hear all the time is:
"What if it rains?"
Irish weather is unpredictable, but that doesn't mean your session has to be cancelled at the first sign of a shower.
Cloudy days actually create lovely soft light for photographs, and many forecasts change several times in the days leading up to your session. We normally make the final decision closer to the date when the forecast is much more reliable.
It's About Connection, Not the Background
Parents often spend a lot of time worrying about choosing the "perfect" location.
In reality, your children won't remember the backdrop. They'll remember chasing bubbles, racing Mum and Dad, being lifted onto shoulders and laughing together. Those are the moments that become your favourite photographs.
The location simply provides the setting.
Your family's connection is what makes the images special.
